In the aftermath of the Great War the international community gave Britain a Mandate to govern Palestine.
The then Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, a man entranced by the Biblical symbolism of the Holy Land, was highly gratified. But it proved to be a land impossible to govern. On 15 May 1948 the British left. That same day the first Arab-Israeli war began.
The National Army Museum has published a short online photo exhibition of Palestine during the Mandate period, together with an abridged history of those grim years. You can find it at http://www.nam.ac.uk/exhibitions/online-exhibitions/palestine
